I booked in advance a room with a private bathroom. The first day, I got a room with a dettached bathroom. The key of the detached bathroom could open another room, so zero security.
The sheets didn't look clean either. I found small bugs, and a blood stain on the bed. I informed the staff about this, and requested to change the room. Nobody cleaned the room or made my bed during the days that I stayed there. At least the AC worked. Also, I found a big spider in the washroom, which I killed.
Staff is friendly, however they like playing music very loudly even after midnight, so it is hard to sleep.
Breakfast is only bread with jam, and coffee.
The neighborhood is tough for North American standards. I grew up in Latin America, so I can handle this, but it can be dangerous if you are a foreigner and don't speak Spanish very well.
For a cheaper price and better service, you can stay at ´Hotel Alux' or Mundo Juvenil Hostal. They are in front, but I just learned about this after my arrival.
Hostal Simon is changing name, and at the entrance the sign says ´La pequena Habana´ since the new owners are Cuban.
Finally, they will try to charge at a higher rate in Mexican pesos, and it doesn´t matter if you got a cheaper price booking online. You have to negotiate the price with them.
