"We stayed at Oohira hotel in October to use it as a base for hiking. It is perfectly located, near the top end of Zao Onsen, right next to the base of the mountain and the big Zao outdoor onsen. We found it with no issues, and the hotel will pick you up from the bus station if you call in advance. The main thing to stand out for us at Oohira was the staff, who were really excellent throughout. They even spoke some English which was surprising and welcome! "The hotel was quiet with only 8 rooms booked. So we could enjoy the onsen almost all by ourselves. Food is tasty and healthy - authentic and healthy with local vegetables and ingredients. Highly recommended for those who would like to have a relaxing onsen holiday and taste of true local food"

"I really don’t know how to review this. It was difficult to get to. The road was steep and dangerous. We were worried our car won’t make it. The hotel is at the top of the mountain. The onsen and the view were great. The food fantastic. Free drinks and cheap alcohol amazing. But... it was super old, dirty, dusty. Smelled really bad. Like an old bus. No WiFi and no air conditioner. Had to do with a little fan. So I’d say ok. Just ok overall. "

"It is a very small hotel in a very quiet small town. We didn't feel very impressed when we first saw the hotel. After we checked in and went to our onsen, it was so amazing and then our fantastic dinner. It was Wows!!! Everything was so perfect, relaxing and so peaceful. We also felt in love with the town. It was so peaceful and didn't want to leave. It worth every afford to get there. Love love it so so much!!!"
