St. Joseph Cathedral Basilica is an elegant 19th-century church recognizable by its imposing columns and large pediment. It is a popular spot for weddings and has beautiful artworks displayed along its interior walls. Gaze up at its majestic ceiling domes and see its impressive statues.
Embark on a free guided tour to learn more about the structure, which was completed in 1885 on the site of previous churches dating back to 1803. Speak with a docent about individual works of art and intricate features of the architecture. Hear about the earlier churches on this spot, which were destroyed by earthquakes.
Among the highlights is the cycle of stained-glass windows in the East Transept depicting biblical tales. Admire the attention to detail in these artistic treasures and follow the parables of the Agony in the Garden, the Crucifixion and many others.
Sit on a pew to enjoy the serenity of the church during one of the religious services, which are in Spanish and English. Hear the sweet music played by the Odell pipe organ, which was built in 1886 and comprises 40,000 parts with 27 ranks, each containing 60 pipes. Note that the structure is open to visitors daily from morning until afternoon, remaining open a little later on Saturdays. Guided tours are available in the afternoon from Tuesday through Friday.
