Find an impressive collection of ancient sculptures, Byzantine art and coins from antiquity in this beautiful Baroque Revival building on Berlin’s Museum Island.

Bode Museum is an institution dedicated to presenting sculptures, art from the Byzantine era and ancient coins. Discover Italian Renaissance and German Gothic sculptures and coins dating back thousands of years.

The museum was completed in 1904 but its ornate façade and interiors underwent extensive refurbishment at the start of the 2000s. The building’s distinctive dome and stone façade look out over the Spree River on one side and a canal on the other. At this location, at the tip of Museum Island, the museum looks like a moated castle.

Explore three different wings of artwork and historical collections at the Bode Museum. Collections are split geographically and chronologically throughout the wings. Wander through the renowned sculpture collection to view works from the early Middle Ages to the late 1700s.

In the Museum for Byzantine Art, see ancient art from the west Roman and Byzantine empires, ranging from the 3rd to the 15th century.

The third wing is known as the Coin Cabinet. Discover the history of currency with the museum’s extensive collection of about 500,000 items. See artifacts from the beginning of minting in Asia Minor in the 7th century B.C., as well as ancient Greek and Roman coins and medieval currency from Eastern Europe.

Children will enjoy a specialized children’s gallery, which explores the museum’s different themes and collections through exciting activities and hands-on exhibits.

The Bode is located on Museum Island. It is accessible via a bridge. Reach the area by tram or the S-Bahn train. The nearest station is a 10-minute walk away.

The Bode Museum is closed on Mondays and open until late on Thursdays. Admission to the museum includes all three wings. Children under 18 can enjoy free admission. Gain free entry to the museum using the Berlin WelcomeCard or Museumspass packages, available for purchase from tourist information centers and museums.
