What you can expect

This is the Big Island's most “in-depth” volcano experience. Join our National Park Certified Guides on a full-day adventure that will take you on a journey of the new and dramatic landscape of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. See how the historically large collapse of the Halemaumau Crater has changed Kilauea Volcano forever.

The day begins with a scenic drive over the stark and beautiful Saddle Road. As you venture across the middle of island, enjoy the vast and diverse landscape as it drastically changes; listen and learn from your interpretive guide as they reveal the stories of the land. The next stop is a treat – enjoyed only by Hawaii Forest and Trail guests! Your guide will take you traversing into the gorgeous Kauhi Cavern. This exclusive access into this private lava tube is known for its rare yellow and gold microbial mats living on and accenting the cave walls. This cave has many unique features including its expansive rooms, 35 foot ceilings, bright golden walls and an “upside down” forest of roots hanging from the cave ceiling. Explore this underground world of volcanic history as your guide paints a picture of volcano past and present. Enjoy a deli-style lunch & refreshments before venturing to the world's most active volcano, Kilauea.

From there we head straight to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Your guide will prepare you for the day's exploration with hiking gear and background information. Given the ever-changing environment of this active volcano, our guides will select the routes that best suites your small group's ability. After taking in the breathtaking views and exploring the Park's diverse and dynamic climates and surroundings, enjoy a warm picnic dinner in the Park to refuel with your fellow travellers.

After a full day of adventure, sit back and relax as your guide returns you to your meeting location and you reflect on your day's volcano experience.

Wonderful experience. Rob was very knowledgeable and friendly and we were glad to have him as our tour guide. He made all questions feel welcomed and was as eager to learn as the guests. We love getting a private tour of the lava tube as it made us feel special. It was even better to see the lava in real life. How epic. The only recommendation I have is for him to play local music or some type of Hawaiian/Polynesian music in between each stop. It will keep the audience attentive and make the time pass even quicker. Great job!

Learned a lot about the volcanos and craters near Kilauea, which is the volcano that has been the most active in recent years. I have been to Volcano National Park many times, and seeing the changes and how the roads have been rerouted because of flows - it’s just amazing! Our guide did a good job of describing the various types of flows and what we were seeing. And going into the lava tube (which was really big!) was impressive!

This tour was awesome! Would've liked less stopping to hear about the plants and more tine to walk across the entire crater. We only got to walk out like 50 feet, hear a story about a volcanoe goddess, then had to turn back around. Less stories, more exploring, please! But still had fun.

It is a long day with a *lot* of driving. However, I really enjoyed the in depth explanation about the volcanoes, the island itself, its history, etc and that made the driving go by quickly. The lava cave is impressive; the short hike through the dried lava (no active lava at the moment) was really nice.
