What you can expect

Embark on a 5-day rafting adventure along the Lacanjá River. Discover the beauty of the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve, visit ancient Mayan ruins, and witness the exuberance of the jungle.

Day 1:
Begin the rafting journey on the Lacanjá River, encountering a sequence of waterfalls and pools. Visit the Lacanjá archaeological site and the Moctuniha waterfalls, where you can swim. To reach them, trek for an hour through the jungle. Return to the rafts and continue paddling for another hour until you reach the camping spot in tents deep within the jungle.

Day 2:
Continue paddling for 2.5 hours until you reach the closest point between the Lacanjá River and the Bonampak archaeological site (approximately 2 kilometres). Hike for 50 minutes to visit the murals and return to the rafts to paddle for another 3 hours through a narrow section of the river until you reach the second camp.

Day 3:
Paddle for 2 hours and visit a very large unnamed archaeological site with temples on both banks of the Lacanjá River. Afterwards, encounter a series of waterfalls and, after two hours of paddling, set up camp at the third site.

Day 4:
Paddle for most of the journey, followed by a narrow, canyon-like section with many waterfalls. One of them has a drop of approximately 15 metres. At the end of the day, deflate the rafts and portage all the equipment to the base of the waterfall. Set up camp at the fourth site.

Day 5:
Paddle for 4 hours along a long pool until you reach the confluence of the Lacanjá River with the Lacantum River. At this point, a motorboat choices you up to take you to the Quiringüicharo community, from where you depart by minivan to the Lacanjá River Camp, arriving around 5 pm.

Throughout the journey, enjoy food, river equipment, camping equipment, a first aid kit, communication equipment, boat transport from Lacanjá mouth to Quiringüicharo, land transport from Quiringüicharo to Lacanjá, entrance fees to the Bonampak archaeological site, specialised guides, and insurance.
