What you can expect

Escape the busy city life of Kuala Lumpur with your trip to the hamlet town of Kuala Selangor. Enjoy the boat ride along the river banks of Kampung Kuantan to catch the colonies of fireflies producing magnificent twinkling lights. Complete your evening with dinner at a local seafood restaurant.

Your journey starts in Kuala Selangor, situated northwest of Kuala Lumpur. You can see Fort Altingsburg, built by the second sultan of Selangor in the 18th century to defend the city against foreign invasion.

A bird sanctuary park is located at the foot of the fort, where you can watch for migratory birds. Also found here are mysterious silvered leaf monkeys, a primate descended from the lineage of Old World monkeys.

Continue your trip with a boat ride along the mangrove swamps. Here, catch these bioluminescent fireflies flashing and producing glimmering lights in synchronised rhythm. Conclude your night tour with local set Chinese dinner at a local restaurant.

This tour is relaxing, our tour guide Micka (a guy) is very friendly, he tell us what to expect when we are on the coach & then talk more when we get to the places... The silver leaf monkeys place is ok, there are people selling foods for monkeys at 10 ringgit for some stick of water spinach, few pieces of cut carrots & banana.. Dinner was impressive with 7 dishes on a share table of 8, it has crabs 😋, it's not huge but very delicious.. after dinner we went on the river to see the fireflies, all in 1 big boat, we can see many sparkling amongst the vegetation on both side of the river, we don't get to see them up close like the picture showing a boat of 2 people looking at the sparkles, hence the 4 stars instead of 5

The Silver leaf monkeys were gentle. Unlike some other kind of monkeys which grab and steel foods from bags as seen on TV, some of them sat on people's shoulders waiting to be fed. Fireflies produced tiny glittering white lights. Together with the bright moon and stars above the scenery was fantastic.

I'm typically not into company tours but this was pretty amazing. The side trip to "Monkey Mountain" was so fun - the silver leaf monkeys were so friendly and one little guy sat on my shoulder until we left. The dinner stop was really delicious - family style serving with a ton of options (sweet and sour pork, chicken, fried tofu, stir fried veggies, rice, crab, fried shrimp, calamari, fruit... it was quite a feast). The firefly portion itself was fairly short but definitely a sight to be seen - absolute magic!

Interesting trip, seeing all of the Oil Palm trees through Selangor was an unexpected experience. We had very good tour guides, the dinner was reasonable. The fireflies were very worth seeing, there was a great deal of plastic and other rubbish in the river, though, disappointed to see this. Malaysia is a great country, with friendly, genuinely welcoming people. The people are becoming more environmentally conscious, but still have a way to go in this area, it has so much natural beauty, it is fragile, however, and definitely needs protection. It's about finding the balance here.
