Zaragoza Park is one of the main gathering areas in the heart of Ciudad del Carmen. The park is surrounded by some of the city’s most popular attractions. Gather in the central bandstand and use the park as a base for exploring the city.
The park was built in the mid-1800s and retains many of its original features, including the French paving. Relax amid the floral displays and plants that decorate the park. Bring a picnic basket to enjoy lunch in this pleasant spot. You may see squirrels, pigeons and other animals scurrying between the bushes.
Take shelter from the sun in the bandstand and gaze up at its impressive bronze ceiling. This is a popular gathering spot for locals in the evening, when lights illuminate Our Lady of Carmen Church nearby. Visit this glorious colonial church and admire its bright yellow façade. Enter through the majestic gateway and arch to see the works of art that decorate the nave. Admire the elegant mahogany wood ceiling and attend a service for a glimpse into the local customs.
Next to the church is the large, modern building of the Carmelita Theater. Purchase tickets to see a dramatic performance or music concert. Relax at a café and watch people go by outside the theater.
Chat with the vendors selling snacks and refreshments outside the church. You can also find all manner of handicrafts, including locally made pottery and hammocks.
Zaragoza Park is in the busy historic district in the southwestern part of Ciudad del Carmen, about 10 to 15 minutes’ drive from the city’s international airport. Visit nearby sights, such as the Malecón, the Victoriano Nieves Céspedes Museum and the Colonial Plaza.
