Vrede en Lust Winery

Take a cellar tour to see the barrels, tanks and bottles in this illustrious wine farm that dates back 300 years.

Vrede en Lust estate is an exclusive winery with seemingly endless rows of grapevines and stunning mountain views. Offering cellar tours and wine tastings, the vineyard is an ideal destination for wine and nature lovers.

Learn about South Africa’s place in the wine industry and inspect the intricate production machinery in a tour of the cellar. Speak with docents about the nuances of the Vrede en Lust Winery grapes in comparison with competitors.

Find out about the winery’s two vineyards, Casey’s Ridge and the farm in Simondium. Temperatures are a little lower at the former, providing ideal conditions for wines that do better in cool climate, such as pinot grigio. Choose from the reds, whites and rosés in the Vrede en Lust range, the Flagship range and the Artisan range.

Stay overnight in the luxurious Manor House, which has foundations that date back to the 1600s before a grand restoration in the 1920s. It has lush landscaped gardens with a pool house and an enclosure where you can sit around an outdoor fire. Other accommodations options include the cottages in the Jonkmanshuis complex and the Vineyard Suites, which offer a view of the Simonsberg Mountains.

Enjoy artisan meals for lunch and breakfast from the Lust Bistro and Bakery. It has a wood-fired brick oven for baking bread and a range of seasonal ingredients and specialties.

Hear the story of the farm, which was built by first owner Jacques de Savoye in the 17th century. The affluent Buys family bought the estate in 1996 and turned it into a prosperous winery.

Be aware that high heels and shoes with leather soles are not permitted during the cellar tour, due to the potential for wet and slippery surfaces.

Find the Vrede en Lust Estate in the rural southern outskirts of Paarl. It is 5 miles (8 kilometers) south of the Laborie Wine Farm and near picturesque landmarks such as the Pearl Valley Golf Estate and Spa and the Wiesenhof Wildpark Private Nature Reserve. Take a train to the Paarl Railway Station and head south to the winery by taxi or bus.
