Treat yourself to some retail therapy during a visit to The Tannery in Christchurch. This small boutique shopping center is housed in a restored Victorian tannery by the Heathcote River. Formerly an industrial precinct where hides were turned into leather, it is now a retail wonderland of more than 50 shops, cafés, restaurants and a cinema. This is one of the few old brick heritage sites to have survived the Christchurch and Canterbury earthquakes of 2010 and 2011 that destroyed many historical buildings.
Browse the independent and specialists stores that are spread across two buildings. These range from men and women’s fashion, jewelry and home wares to art and crafts, books and outdoor leisure. Update your look with a visit to the hairdressers or barbers. Work up a sweat in the yoga studio and then luxuriate with a decadent treatment at the day spa.
Even if you’re not planning a shopping trip, stop by The Tannery to study the architecture of the 19th-century, one-story brick buildings. Wander along the Victorian-era atrium of the main building which is bordered on both sides by mahogany shop fronts. Appreciate the beauty of the tiled floors and look up at the glass ceiling with its iron arches. Unwind with a craft beer and some artisan food in a restaurant or café.
Come back at night to dine in one of the restaurants and to watch a movie in the cinema complex. This entertainment venue encompasses two movie theaters that present independent movies, documentaries and selected mainstream pictures. Go to a concert at the mall’s live music venue which features local and international musicians. Visit The Tannery’s official website for details of upcoming events.
Drive to The Tannery in about 10 minutes from the Central Business District. On-site parking is free. Alternatively, travel by taxi or local bus services. This boutique shopping center is open daily.
