Take a tour of this striking Georgian mansion, which has rooms dedicated to the life and work of historic Louisiana governors.

Visit The Old Governor’s Mansion and walk in the footsteps of the state governors of Louisiana. Learn about their influence on the state and spot original artifacts. This Georgian-style house dates back to 1930 and was commissioned by the then governor, Huey P. Long. The Old Governor’s Mansion served as the governor’s residence until the 1960s, when a new mansion was built close to the Louisiana State Capitol.

The best way to explore the mansion is on a guided tour. Knowledgeable docents will guide you between the rooms while explaining the landmark’s history and former occupants in addition to the ups and downs of Louisiana.

Before entering, take a moment to look at the building’s façade featuring a pedimented entrance supported by Corinthian columns. Note the similarities to Washington’s White House. Legend states that Huey P. Long wished to create an environment similar to the official home of the President of the United States.

Step inside to the foyer and marvel at its gleaming checkerboard floor and marble staircase. Stand in the regal East Ballroom, another aspect that bears a strong resemblance to the White House. Admire the chandeliers and huge pier mirrors.

Go to the State Dining Room, which has walls decorated with a French-designed pictorial wallpaper called Vues d’Amerique du Nord (Scenic America). Former first lady Jacqueline Kennedy commissioned the very same wallpaper for the White House’s Diplomatic Reception Room.

Other rooms in the mansion honor individual governors such as Huey P. Long, his brother Earl K. Long and Jimmie Davis. Spot authentic period furniture, antique clothing, books and portraits.

The Old Governor’s Mansion is located in downtown Baton Rouge. It’s just a short walk from major city attractions, including Baton Rouge River Center and Shaw Center for the Arts. Public buses stop nearby and metered parking is available on the surrounding streets.

The attraction opens from Tuesday to Friday, except for select public holidays and when there’re private events. There’s an admission fee, which includes the guided tour. Find full details on the Old Governor’s Mansion official website.
