South Head Park is a picturesque green area with a playground and shaded viewpoints overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Nature trails meander through thickets of woodland in this charming park on a peninsula between scenic bays near the Clarence River. Stand at the edge of this headland with the breeze in your face and a view of the water.
Take snacks and drinks to the park and lay down a blanket on the grass for a picnic. The site also has designated picnic tables. Bring your kids to the small playground surrounded by lush vegetation. Beyond the climbing frame and wooden play area is a spectacular view of the sparkling ocean. Stay for sunset for the best vista, when the sky fills with moody hues.
Choose from the beaches on either side of the headland, including Yamba Beach and Pippi Beach. Swim in the water with your family and sunbathe on the sand on a warm, sunny afternoon.
Among the highlights north of this peninsula is the Yamba Lighthouse, which is 135 feet (41 meters) above sea level on a cliff next to the Clarence River. Note that its light beams can be observed more than 17 nautical miles (31 kilometers) away. See the nearby replica of the original 1879 lighthouse that is used today as a studio for a community radio station.
South Head Park is on the eastern headland that juts out from the eastern side of Yamba. It stands between Shoal Bay and Wooli Bay near the Clarence River. Ride a bus to one of the many stops near the peninsula. You can also drive and leave your car in the small parking lot where the headland meets the main road. Descend the steps from the main road to the tree-lined park below. Visit other nearby landmarks, including Dolphin Park, Hickey Island and Yamba Golf and Country Club.
