Search online for pictures of Santa Cruz and many of the results will show you San Lorenzo Cathedral. The impressive building, also known as Basilica Menor de San Lorenzo, is one of the most instantly recognizable landmarks in the city. Step inside the cathedral to see displays of venerated religious art.
Trace centuries of history in the basilica. Although the current cathedral was designed in the mid-19th century by the French architect Felipe Bertrés, there has been a church on this site since 1605. Look for neoclassical designs on the façade, typical of churches from the mid-19th century.
Admire the exterior of the building, which faces the town square. Two burnt-red towers stand either side of an elegant pediment, which is characterized by simple curves instead of religious iconography.
Head inside for a moment of peace in the restrained interior. Wander through the nave, which is lined with intricately patterned pillars and look up at the vaulted wooden ceiling.
The basilica hosts the Museum of Sacred Art, which displays items that originated solely in Bolivia. Study religious paintings and sculptures depicting biblical scenes. The museum also exhibits silver and gold items such as bowls and candelabras.
Climb the clock tower for panoramic views of Santa Cruz. The tower consists of three levels. The first two are best for the scenery, while the third level takes you inside the timepiece. Watch the inner mechanics of the clock ticking away and see how it triggers the bells.
Take some time after visiting the church to explore Plaza 24 de Septiembre. The square, named after an uprising before the city’s independence from Spain, is spacious and green. Relax on one of the benches while listening to local musicians play camba music.
Travel to San Lorenzo Cathedral on a bus, which will drop you a few streets away. Walk from the Cathedral to Parque Arenal, where you can relax by a boating lagoon. Both the clock tower and the museum have admission fees. Visit the museum on a Tuesday, Thursday or Sunday. Climb the clock tower on any day of the week.
