Pont de Pierre

This graceful arch bridge crosses the Garonne River, linking the historic center of the town with the more modern right bank.

Pont de Pierre, also known as the Stone Bridge, was for many years the only way to cross the Garonne River. Walk along the footpaths of the bridge and enjoy stunning views of Bordeaux. Return at night to see the iron lamps lit up. The bridge is a perfect point to start a journey around the city's old town or to wander around La Bastide, a lesser-known district on the other side of the river.

The bridge was inaugurated in 1822. Cross the 1,600-foot-long (490-meter) structure on foot and admire views over the old town. Note the iron railings and elegant lamps that run along the length and pause to look for the pointed bell tower of the Basilica of St. Michael.

To see the bridge from afar, stroll along the Place de la Bourse or head to the Parc des sports Saint-Michel. It’s worth coming back to the bridge in the evening, when you can glimpse shimmering reflections of the city lights in the water.

Arrange your trip to coincide with the Bordeaux River Festival, which takes place in May every two years. During this event, historic ships line the quay and the festival ends with fireworks set off from the bridge itself.

From the foot of the bridge, the old town is just steps away. Explore the historic sights here, such as the Cathédrale St. André, the religious heart of Bordeaux, and the Aquitaine Museum, which is devoted to Bordeaux’s history. Head to the right bank to reach the Jardin Botanique, the Parc des Berges and areas for shopping and entertainment.

If you don’t want to walk, consider riding a tram across instead. The bridge was updated in 2003 to accommodate the city's growing tram network. Stalingrad is the nearest stop on the right bank and Porte de Bourgogne is on the left.
