Enjoy a vast selection of rare roses that includes ramblers, tea roses and floribunda, spread out across this charming terraced park. Lie back on the grass and unwind with views over the city from Ooty Rose Garden.
Originally home to less than 2,000 plants, the garden now has more than 20,000 roses with approximately 2,200 varieties. In 2006 it was recognized as a garden of excellence by the World Federation of Rose Societies.
Amble along the five terraces that make up this 10-acre (4-hectare) garden to find exhibitions and arrangements that are maintained and developed by the local department of horticulture. Plant lovers will have no trouble spotting ramblers alongside a range of hybrid species such as tea roses.
Whether or not you have an eye for flowers you will be impressed by the unusual black and green types as well as the charming miniature roses. Be sure not to miss several intricate sculptures that have been created using only plants. See fountains and diving dolphins along with a superb rose head that sits pride of place in the center of the garden.
With your senses overcome with the delightful colors and scents of the roses, head to the Nila Maadam observation platform at the top of the garden. Above a short staircase a group of pillars support an arched roof that provides shelter from the sun. From here you can gaze out over the city and to the rolling green hills beyond.
Ooty Rose Garden is located a short distance east of the city center. Take a tuk-tuk from your hotel or come by public bus. The garden is open all day throughout the year but is in full bloom between May and July. There is a small entry fee for all ages.
