One Canada Square is an iconic skyscraper and one of the tallest and most important towers in London. Reaching a height of 770 feet (235 meters), its pyramid-shaped roof and flashing aircraft warning light can be seen from across the city. On a clear day, the structure as well as the surrounding commercial high-rises, can even be seen from the summit of Parliament Hill in Hampstead Heath park in northwest London. People-watch from the docklands for a glimpse into the hectic and vibrant setting of one of London’s leading business and financial hubs.
Find out about the construction and history of the building before you go. The building was constructed in 1991 and was based on New York’s Brookfield Place, formerly the World Financial Center. Though it once had an observation deck on its top floor, this was closed after a few months due to security concerns. Hear how the Shard usurped its position as the tallest skyscraper in London in 2012.
The building is primarily made up of office space, although the basement has a commercial area. Stroll alongside business types in the shopping center and browse the upscale products for sale. The building has 50 floors in total, but all levels above the lobby are offices and remain off-limits to the public.
Enter the lobby and admire the elegant use of marble and stained glass in the décor. A four-piece sculpture by British artist Keith Milow sits beside the staircases leading down to the basement.
Relax with snacks and refreshments at the One Canada Square Restaurant. During the week, the space is a popular setting for business meetings between suited finance workers. Overlooking the adjacent Canada Square Park is the glass Park Pavilion structure, which houses more restaurants. Temporary public art installations can occasionally be seen in the park, lobby and surrounding areas of Canary Wharf.
One Canada Square is in the business district of Canary Wharf in east London. Ride the London Underground or Docklands Light Railway to the modern Canary Wharf Station beside the skyscraper. Alternative methods of transport include buses and taxis.
