Dresden is famous across the world for its Christmas Market, or Striezelmarkt, but the Old Market Square bustles year round. Mentioned for the first time in 1370, it was the heart of the city until its destruction in 1945. Today, after a brief time as a parking lot under the GDR, it has been reborn, hosting markets, sporting events, performances and more throughout the year. Come for a specific event or just wander by and see what’s on, a perfect way to experience the real Dresden.
Before plunging into the action, take a moment to walk around the edge of the square and admire the architecture of the new buildings, whose elements recall the medieval and Renaissance buildings that once ringed the square. More modern architecture is on display at the 1969 Dresden Palace of Culture with its unique façade, and the Altmarkt-Galerie shopping mall nearby.
The excitement is in the middle, however, where stalls and stages are set up. At the Striezelmarkt, start any visit with stops at the mulled wine and waffle kiosks, ideal for getting warm and readying for a few hours of browsing traditional crafts. In summer, relax with a beer and snacks on the long beer garden tables and watch people go by. In spring, welcome the new year with fresh spring vegetables, bread and honey from the farmers who come into town with their produce. Sometimes you’ll even find a Ferris wheel or a carousel set up.
The Old Market Square is in the center of Dresden, in the Innere Altstadt, not far from many of the city’s main tourist attractions. Walk from Dresden Central Station in 15 minutes or take the tram to the square’s designated stop in 10 minutes. Walk to the Frauenkirche in 8 minutes. Dresden Airport is a 30-minute drive or 35-minute public transit ride away. Parking is available in an underground car park below the square or below the Altmarkt-Galerie next door. Hours and operating days for the different markets vary, but events generally take place during daylight.
