The National Gallery of Umbria contains the region’s most impressive and complete collection of art dating from the 13th to the 19th centuries. Be amazed at the range and variety of artworks on display, which include paintings on wood and canvas, frescoes, marble and wood sculptures, woven tapestries, gold items and much more.
The artworks are spread across around 42,055 square feet (4,000 square meters) of gallery space on the upper floors of the Palazzo dei Priori. The building itself is notable for its Gothic civil architecture. The National Gallery of Umbria was founded in the 1700s, yet many of its works came from the Academy of Fine Arts of Perugia, which was established in 1573. Allow plenty of time to peruse the pieces, which are organized chronologically, creating a historic timeline.
Discover some of the region’s true masterpieces at the National Gallery of Umbria. Of particular note are some of the medieval and Renaissance works of art, including parts of the marble fountain by Arnolfo di Cambio, as well as works by Nicola and Giovanni Pisano, Piero della Francesca and Francesco di Giorgio Martini.
Go in search of the Madonna with Child by Duccio di Buoninsegna, which dates to the 13th century, and the Guidalotti Altarpiece by Beato Angelico. These were once housed in the grand Basilica di San Domenico, and you can visit the church afterward to get a feel for their original home.
View large collections of works by Umbrian painters such as Benedetto Bonfigli, Bartolomeo Caporali, Fiorenzo di Lorenzo, Perugino and Pintoricchio. Of particular note is the Chapel of Priors fresco by Benedetto Bonfigli. In addition, you will find masterpieces by local acclaimed goldsmiths, sculptors and ceramists. Find ancient illustrations, maps, woven cloth and inked pages among the many different forms of art. Later works on show include those by Pietro da Cortona, Orazio Gentileschi, Francesco Trevisani and Sebastiano Conca.
