Musée des Beaux-arts Tours and Activities

Musee des Beaux-arts as well as a large group of people

View the fascinating collections at Nancy’s premier art museum, which is housed in an impressive 18th-century building.

The illustrious Musée des Beaux-Arts is located in a striking and stately building in Place Stanislas in the historic center of Nancy. Enjoy the sumptuous setting and appreciate its significant collection of European fine art that dates from the 14th century to the 21st century.

The Musée des Beaux-Arts was founded in 1793 and built under the orders of Stanislas Leszczyński, the duke of Lorraine. Over the centuries, its collections have grown significantly. In 1999, it underwent a significant extension to accommodate the increasing number of artworks.

The museum is set on four floors. In the basement, you’ll find the remains of the old medieval city fortifications dating from the 15th to the 17th century. The basement also holds a dazzling collection of Daum crystal that positively sparkles under the museum’s lights. Here, find a section devoted to the Nancy-born artist Jean Prouvé, displaying various pieces of furniture and graphic works from the local designer and architect.

Move to the ground floor to admire the 19th- and 20th-century artworks in the picture wings. Look for Monet’s striking impressionist painting Sunset at Étretat and for Picasso’s Homme et femme.

Continue up to the second- and third-floor galleries, which are connected by a stunning wrought iron staircase created by celebrated French ironworker Jean Lamour. As you stroll around the upper floors, note how the works are displayed chronologically from the 14th to the 19th century, allowing you to trace the evolution of different art styles. While examining the artworks, you’ll come across many recognizable names, including Tintoretto, Caravaggio and Rubens.

The museum also showcases sculptures from artists such as Zadkine and Rodin, as well as numerous prints and engravings. Check to see if any additional temporary exhibitions are being shown during your visit.

Take the bus or tram to the Cathédrale stop to reach the museum on Place Stanislas. The Musée des Beaux-Arts is open every day except Tuesday. There is an admission fee and an extra fee for tours.
