Take a relaxing and scenic ferry trip to the sacred island of Miyajima and begin your journey to serene shrines and a tranquil mountain peak.

Miyajima Ferry Terminal is the gateway to Miyajima Island, also known as Itsukushima Island, home to one of Japan’s most famous shrines. Located in the Seto Inland Sea, this sacred island is accessible only by boat. Watch for the breathtaking view of the shrine and its striking red torii gate as you approach on the water.

As you sail across the Seto Inland Sea or the narrow Onoseto Strait, experience having the sea breeze in your hair and observe stunning coastal views from the top decks of the boat. You’ll see the superb shrine’s traditional architecture and the bold red frame of its torii gate to the southeast of the Miyajima Ferry Terminal. Purchase a drink or a snack and enjoy the scenic journey. Spot the towering red-and-black roofs of the Five-Story Pagoda and the densely forested slope of Mount Misen in the distance.

As you leave your boat, look for the Miyajima Tourist Association next to the ferry terminal. Visit this building to plan your visit in Miyajima. Popular attractions near the Miyajima Ferry Terminal include the Uguisu Walking Path, Five-Story Pagoda, Miyajima Aquarium and Itsukushima Shrine.

Farther inland, visit the tranquil Momijidani Park, the Daisho-in Temple and the stunning peak of Mount Misen. Explore this mountain’s sacred and humbling sights on foot or via the Miyajima Ropeway.

Two ferry companies offer the 10-minute boat ride across the strait from Miyajimaguchi Train Station. JR operates one of the ferries, which means Japan Rail Pass holders can enjoy free access. Purchase the Miyajima Free Pass from the Miyajima Tourist Association for unlimited travel on the ferries, Miyajima Ropeway and Hiroshima’s trams for 2 days. A more scenic and expensive option is catching a boat from the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Park and Hiroshima Port. These boat trips take about 50 minutes to reach Miyajima Ferry Terminal.

Walk to many of Miyajima’s attractions in 10 to 20 minutes from the Miyajima Ferry Terminal. Taxis are also available on the island.
