Koala Conservation Centre Tours and Activities

Phillip Island which includes zoo animals and cuddly or friendly animals

Spot koalas munching away on eucalyptus leaves, wander along a treetop boardwalk or spot wildlife during a bush walk of this Australian wildlife refuge.

The Koala Conservation Centre is located in the center of scenic Phillip Island, just off the coast of Victoria. Take a walk along its elevated boardwalks to see Australia’s unique birds and marsupials up close and learn more about the behavior and habitat of koalas in particular. Enjoy being up in the canopy and the different perspective and wildlife encounters you get from above.

As its name suggests, the Koala Conservation Centre is not a regular wildlife park. The focus here is on caring for the marsupials in their natural environment, so move quietly and don’t disturb these still recovering marsupials.

First follow the Tree Top Koala Boardwalk for about half a mile (800 meters). Even perfectly healthy koalas will sleep up to 20 hours a day and blend in surprisingly well with the gray bark of their eucalyptus tree homes. As you explore the path, check the forks of the tree branches for humps, which may well be dozing koalas. If you are lucky, some will be active. Watch them climbing the trees, carrying their young, or munching on leaves.

Continue your lofty walks with the Tree Top Woodland Boardwalk. Notice the different varieties of trees that make up the natural Australian habitat. Look and listen out for birds, such as the cheeky kookaburra. This big type of kingfisher is easily recognized by its call that rises and falls like laughter.

Back at ground level, walk along some of the other easy trails that meander through the 15 acres (6 hectares) of natural bushland. As well as koalas, the park is home to various other native marsupials, such as wallabies and echidnas.

Don’t miss the Visitor Interpretation Centre with its interactive displays to learn fascinating facts about the koalas and their environment. See how conservation groups are working on the island to preserve the rich natural heritage. Pop into the gift shop to purchase a cuddly toy koala to take home with you.

The Koala Conservation Centre is open daily. You can purchase your tickets in conjunction with a Parks Pass, to receive a discount for a selection of family attractions in Victoria. Free parking is available at the center if you come by car and taxis are available on the island too.
