With a capacity for 48,000 fans, the beautifully redeveloped Khalifa International Stadium is a perfect venue for soccer matches, track and field meets and other sports events. Learn about the venue’s history. The original stadium was constructed at this site for the 1976 Gulf Cup, helping to further Qatar’s importance as a global soccer presence. Twin arches gave the stadium a distinctive look, welcoming teams from Europe, South America and Asia to events of increasing importance.
The stadium underwent a three-year renovation, reopening in 2017. A canopy now stretches between the dual arches to enable temperature control for players and fans. LED lighting illuminates the grass field and digital floodlights allow imaginative color schemes to decorate the arches.
The highest point of the stadium is 330 feet (100 meters). Look up to see the 980-foot-tall (300-meter) Aspire Tower adjacent to the stadium. Its torch-like appearance symbolizing a large flame was created for Doha’s hosting of the 2006 Asian Games. Stay in the hotel in the tower or simply visit the neighborhood in the evening to see both structures brilliantly lit up.
While in this area known as the Aspire Zone, see some of its other attractions. Aspire Park is Doha’s biggest park, with jogging trails, a lush green space that is perfect for families and a large lake with beautiful fountains. Visit the nearby Villaggio, a Venice-themed mall, which has shopping, a movie theater, an indoor theme park and gondola rides.
Khalifa International Stadium is about 6 miles (10 kilometers) west of Downtown Doha in the Al Waab district. In line with the stadium’s sustainability goals, join other visitors traveling here by bus or using the dedicated Sports City metro station for a green mass transit route with a lower carbon footprint than individual autos. The trip takes about 35 minutes from Downtown Doha.
To attend athletic or other events at the stadium, apply for tickets early from the appropriate sports organizations’ websites.
