Kaohsiung Confucius Temple

Learn about the most significant philosopher in Chinese history in Taiwan’s largest temple where you can pay homage to the memory of Confucius.

Confucius Temple is an elegant spiritual complex on the northern shore of Lotus Pond. The modern religious structures imitate the buildings of the Song Dynasty in their elegant appearance and symmetrical design. It is the largest of the Confucius complexes in Taiwan. Appreciate the serene ambiance in this spiritual area.

You will find many steps to climb to reach the temple complex. Look back on the town when you get to the top and capture photos of the panoramic view. As you enter the temple, write a prayer and put it on the board in the hope it will be answered. Amble through the courtyard at the heart of the complex and capture photos of the various structures. See Ta Cheng Palace in the center of the site.

In the small museum, learn about Confucius’ life and philosophy. Find out how local residents now celebrate his life and how these traditions have changed over time. Climb to the viewpoint near the Sun Yat-Sen statue and enjoy the vista of trees, shrubs and parts of the city.

Admire the views of Mount Banping to the east as a scenic backdrop to the complex. Visit the temple on the annual Teacher’s Day at the end of September to celebrate Confucius’ birthday.

The religious site was initially constructed in another location in the 17th century and was rebuilt next to Lotus Pond in 1977. Venture south along the lake to see other temples and intriguing attractions, such as the Dragon Tiger Tower.

Confucius Temple lies just north of Lotus Pond in the center of the city. There are many bus stops in the area. Ride the metro to Zuoying Station on the Red Line and walk west for a few minutes to get to the temple. Find the Spring and Autumn Pavilions and the Dragon Tiger Tower nearby along the lake’s western shore.
