Fitzroy Beach is a popular swimming beach and holiday destination in New Plymouth on the west coast of New Zealand’s North Island. Surf lifesavers patrol Fitzroy Beach during the summer making it a safe place for swimmers. Autumn and winter attract surfers who come here for the consistent swell. The beach is also ideal for wind surfing.
Walk from the beach to Fitzroy Village, a small shopping district with cafés and gift stores. Behind the beach is the Fitzroy Beach Reserve, offering activities for those not wanting to get wet.
The Coastal Walkway is one of New Plymouth’s most awarded sites. The long-distance promenade runs along Fitzroy Beach before continuing past other natural attractions including the Waipu Lagoons and Te Rewa Rewa Reserve. Walk or cycle across the Te Rewa Rewa Bridge, a striking architectural structure that locals describe as being reminiscent of a whale’s skeleton or a curving wave. Look for the magnificent Mount Taranaki in the distance as you cross the bridge.
Find Fitzroy Beach just 3 kilometres (2 miles) from the centre of New Plymouth, in Taranaki. Parking can be found in the Fitzroy Beach Reserve and is free of charge.
