Wander amid the greenery of Elisabeth Park just as the Empress Elizabeth of Austria did during her visits to Merano. Established in 1860, Elisabeth Park covers 1.75 acres (0.7 hectares) on the southern shores of the Passer River. Find shade from the summer sun beneath tall trees, spot artistic features and admire views of Merano Historic Centre.
Pathways wrap around grassy lawns in the park. Look up at ancient trees, most notably a 200-year-old gray poplar tree. In the center of the park is a marble sculpture that depicts Empress Elisabeth of Austria dressed in modest clothes and sitting on wicker chair. Unveiled in 1903, the statue was moved during Italy’s fascist period and returned in 1977.
If you get hungry, take a break at the park café. Order a pasta dish, salad, sandwich or sweet pastries with a cocktail, coffee or fruit juice. Sit back and relax while enjoying the soothing sounds of the fountain next to the café’s patio. Let your kids burn off some energy at the adjacent playground.
Passeggiata Estate (aka Summer Promenade) is an esplanade that runs between the edge of Elisabeth Park and the Passer River. Cedar, pine, poplar and sequoia trees provide a cool haven away from the hot summer sunshine. Spot notable landmarks on the opposite side of the river such as Porta Passiria gateway and Wandelhalle, built in the 1860s as a sun shelter.
Sissi’s Path leads from the park and connects the city with Trauttmansdorff Castle. This is the same route that Empress Elisabeth walked during her visits to the city and it passes 11 sights, including castles and hotels, connected to her. The path is accessible year round and is suitable for strollers and wheelchairs.
Reach Elisabeth Park by crossing the river via the Postbrücke bridge. Parking is limited around the park, which is why it is a good idea to get here on foot or by bike.
