Colcello is a lovely old farmhouse just outside the peaceful village of San Leo Bastia on the border between Umbria and Tuscany. There are stunning views of the hills opposite. You have sole use of the gardens and are not overlooked by another property. A ten-minute walk takes you down to the village where you can sip a cappucino or campari in one of the two bars, buy fresh bread, pecorino and prosciutto for your lunch or enjoy a delicious pizza in the village restaurant. The hillsides ring with birdsong, butterflies flutter among the lavender and olive trees and in late spring and early summer, the gardens light up with fireflies! If you are looking to relax in beautiful surroundings, this is the place for you.
The accommodation is simple and rustic - this is not a glitzy modern villa! However, with a garden of your own and stunning views, we believe Colcello offers outstanding value - a perfect getaway for couples or small families. The accommodation consists of the upper half of a stonebuilt farmhouse. The lower half (owned by the same owner) is not rented out, so you enjoy complete peace and seclusion.
There are two bedrooms, both with beautiful views, mosquito frames over the windows and wooden shutters. The cosy kitchen/living room has oak beams and the original stone-tiled floor. It's furnished with a sofa and armchair plus dining table, chairs and shelves housing a small library of books. In the kitchen area there is a double sink, fridge-freezer, gas hob, electric oven and grill and cupboards containing all the necessary equipment and utensils. There's also an open fire for winter use. The bathroom has a bath with handheld shower, washbasin, lavatory and bidet.
Outside, there is a shady pergola, a thatched terrace with beautiful views over the hills and a table and chairs for alfresco eating. Steps lead down to the sun terrace.
The attractions of Cortona, Assisi, Citta di Castello, Perugia, Gubbio and Arezzo are all within an hour's drive. This is a great location for art lovers, walkers and those who just like to mosey around old hill towns and do some people-watching!
Colcello is on a hillside. The last stretch of the road is on an unsurfaced gravel road and the final bit is steep and narrow. There are steps both inside and outside. For this reason, we don't recommend it to families with very young children, adults with mobility problems or nervous drivers. It's best suited to a couple but also good for two couples or a family with children aged five and over.
