The Church of Our Lady of the Remedies is a magnificent religious building of colonial design. It has an ornate interior, adorned with all manner of figures and furnishings. Gaze up at the impressive façade, with its stone pillars, elegant balconies and strong pediment.
The church has a cross above its central frontage and has three doors at its base. Enter and enjoy the sense of tranquility in the large nave, which serves as a cool retreat from the afternoon sun. Light a candle in memory of a loved one and leave a donation with the church.
Marvel at the display of countless white, blue and gold paper roses. Admire the lovely tiled floor and notice the quaint alcoves filled with artistic pieces. Windows with little balconies line the interior walls, from which yellow-and-white pieces of cloth hang. Attend a Mass for a glimpse into the customs and traditions of the locals.
Climb up to one of the balconies and enjoy the view of the nave from above. Chat with parishioners, or take a guided tour to find out about the history of slavery in this part of the world and its relation to the church. Learn about the history of the architecture of the church, which dates back to the 1800s.
After visiting the building, enjoy a meal at one of the restaurants flanking the narrow cobbled alleys leading off from the church. Relax in a café and peruse the items for sale in the shops.
The Church of our Lady of the Remedies is located in Paraty’s historic center. It is one block south from the mouth of the town’s river, where the water enters the Bay of Carioca. Visit other attractions in the vicinity, such as Bandeira Square, Matriz Square and the town’s other picturesque churches.
