An impressive castle of great historic importance in the center of San Sebastián stands on a beautiful area with spectacular city views.

The Castillo de la Mota (Mota Castle) is one of the most famous constructions in San Sebastián in northern Spain. It is located at the top of Monte Urgull (Urgull Mountain), 426 feet (130 meters) above sea level. Explore the fantastic castle and learn about its importance as a solid fortress to defend the city.

This castle in San Sebastián was built atop the mountain to defend the settlement from foreign attacks. The city was located at the base of Monte Urgull because it was considered a safe location. The tall hill protected it from the force of the sea and the strong winds coming from the north. The top of the mountain was the perfect site to build a fortress. At the beginning of the 12th century, King Sancho VII from Navarre ordered the construction of a protective wall around the village and a castle that would serve as a fort. During the 16th century, the Castillo de la Mota went under several renovations for varied reasons. In 1575, for example, lightning struck the castle, causing a devastating fire. Visit this amazing spot in the País Vasco (Basque Country) and discover its story of war and resistance.

While you are visiting the castle, make sure you see the Monumento al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús (Monument to Jesus Sacred Heart), also known as Cristo de la Mota (Mota Christ). Take photos of the high pyramid with a chapel inside and an impressive sculpture on top. The statue is a beautiful 41-foot-tall (12.5-meter) Jesus created in 1950 out of concrete by the sculptor Federico Coullaut-Valera and the architect Pedro Muguruza.

The Monte Urgull is a fantastic site to take panoramic photos of the city and the sea. Explore this mountain and see its many interesting sites. You’ll find the Mota Castle, the Jesus Monument and other parts of the fortress, including barracks and warehouses.

Visit the Castillo de la Mota and discover the history and beauty of San Sebastián.
