Explore this “Magic Town” and enjoy views from the tiny chapel on the side of an enormous monolith overlooking the valley.

Bernal is an enchanting village with quaint shops dotted along its narrow, cobbled alleys. Surrounded by rocky giants, the commune offers spectacular views of the scenic terrain in the state of Querétaro. Chat to the friendly locals for a glimpse into the local culture and history.

Climb up part of the Peña de BernalOpens in a new window, a monolith that looms over the village. Reaching 1,421 feet (433 meters), the tall rock formation dates back millions of years and is today a site of pilgrimage for its charming chapel located halfway up. From this vantage point, capture photos of the excellent views of the town and the surrounding vineyards and farms.

Wander through the charming lanes of the village center and appreciate the year-round hot weather. May is the hottest month and January is the mildest in this dry region.

Browse the various shops selling traditional handicrafts and restaurants serving local dishes, such as gorditas (flour tortillas). The town is also known for its candy, which is made from goat’s milk. Go to the Museo del Dulce for a history of the town’s obsession with candy. Learn about the types of handmade candy produced in different regions of Mexico and enjoy tastings of the various products.

Purchase wool blankets and ponchos from local vendors to protect yourself from the strong mountain winds. Clothes, handmade crafts and carpentry are also popular products.

Known as a Magic Town, Bernal has been immersed in symbolism and legends since its inception in 1642. Attend the festivities of the annual feast day devoted to the town’s patron, St. Sebastián, on January 20.

The village is a short drive from Colón and Cadereyta in the state of Querétaro in central Mexico. Arrive by bus from the North Central Truck Station in the nearby city of Querétaro. Once in Bernal, get around by motorcycle taxis and discover a town steeped in tradition and magic.
