The Brown Bear Saloon is a very unique property and although the rooms are very basic (this is reflected in the price) the staff are wonderful, helpful, friendly and the food is good. We enjoyed our stay there.

Nice stay for a few nights with a few pros & cons. Compared with anything in Anchorage, the price was great. Nice service from the staff in checking in (and when dining in). Also couldn't complain about the location - absolutely beautiful and only an hour from Portage/Whittier. On the downside, the room was tiny & had no TV (which I got used to), the wifi - while appreciated - was verrry slow, and there were a couple nights where the noise from the bar below continued past 12am.

This property is pretty sketchy. The doors to the room are literally like doors to your bedroom with a lock on it. Anybody could kick that door in at any time. We heard people talking and yelling all night long. The walls are thin. It does not seem safe at all unless they get some heavy duty locks in there. You’re not protected.
