Airlie Beach Lagoon

Spend the day with the family enjoying the sheltered waters of Airlie Beach’s own tropical oasis, surrounded by landscaped gardens and grassy picnic areas.

Airlie Beach Lagoon is a safe and relaxing swimming spot in the heart of the township, where you can play and swim in the clear waters and enjoy the pretty tropical surroundings. Known affectionately to visitors and locals as “the lagoon,” this sheltered man-made pool has been a favored meeting place since 2001 and combines elements of a natural lagoon to create an enticing and secure environment to unwind.

Walk around the sheltered haven on the looped pathway and find a spot to spread out on the grassy banks. Find some shade under tall palm trees or covered pavilions and lay out your towel or picnic blanket. Children will love the warm shallows, where they can splash in the sunshine. There is a sandy shore at one end of the lagoon that is a perfect play area for younger children. With naturally stinger-free salt waters and lifeguard-patrolled pools, its easy to see why Airlie Beach Lagoon is a popular family spot.

Make your way down the lagoon’s gentle slope and paddle in the deeper waters. Do some relaxing exercise or perch on the water’s edge and look out to the spectacular coastline of Airlie Beach, which wraps around the sheltered lagoon waters. You’ll see the broad sweep of white sands stretching out on either side of the lagoon. Watch boats sailing out from the Whitsunday Sailing Club or cruising around the headlands from Abell Point Marina.

Spread out a picnic on one of the tables on the grassy landscaped foreshore or make use of the lagoon’s barbecue facilities. Alternatively, you can grab a snack or meal at one of the cafés and restaurants that line the waterfront.

Airlie Beach Lagoon is located at the center of Airlie Beach’s foreshore. It has accessible facilities and is family friendly. The lagoon has free public showers and restrooms, as well as a security desk and daily lifeguard patrol. Parking is available on site and on nearby streets. This attraction is open 7 days a week for free.
