San Pedro

Travel Guide
San Pedro featuring general coastal views
See how this former fishing village has transformed into a stunning Caribbean destination centered on the acclaimed Hol Chan Marine Reserve.

San Pedro is possibly Belize’s top spot for scuba diving and a popular location for snorkelers as well. It also provides a lively display of local culture and history, emphasized in its Ambergris Museum & Cultural Center. Experience the fun Caribbean atmosphere as you walk along the beach and enjoy music booming from colorful shops.

Hol Chan Marine Reserve is the main reason for the influx of scuba enthusiasts to the area. Book your boat trip and diving session in one of the world’s most acclaimed diving sites. See turtles, eels, sting rays and even sharks among the countless colorful fish and coral.

Go to the Ambergris Museum to learn about the Mayas who once populated this region and the area’s intriguing past as a pirate’s refuge. Visit the gift shop and refreshment stall.

Look around the works at the Gallery of San Pedro. The original pieces, which are crafted by locals, are available for purchase. The town has several other informative cultural complexes, including the Black & White Cultural Entertainment Center and the Belizean Melody Art Gallery. Relax with a beer at one of the many lively bars with views of the sea.

Learn about the conditions and processes for making coffee at the Caye Coffee Roasting Company. Take a guided tour of the facilities and see the coffee beans in all phases of production. Purchase fresh coffee from the site to take home.

Locals, known as San Pedranos, speak Spanish, English, Kriol and Spanglish. The town has hot weather year-round with less annual rainfall than the rest of Belize. The dry season runs from January to early May.

Find the pretty town at the southern point of the island of Ambergris Caye, east of northern Belize. A small airport serves San Pedro and takes passengers to Belize’s main transportation hub, the Philip S.W. Goldson International Airport.

San Pedro is a magnet for divers. Join scuba enthusiasts congregating at the museums and shops before their underwater adventures.

Too many carts - walking on the streets was very dangerous. We used the beach as our main walking area, and entered the town streets from the nearest beach access. Or we took taxis even within the town. San Pedro needs to restrict carts and cars.

The town had a great small-town vibe, and everyone was welcoming and friendly. Amazing diving off the reef (tons of nurse and reef sharks). Nothing felt overly touristy or overdeveloped. Some great local food and crafts.

I found San Pedro safe and the people friendly and accommodating, the streets can be quite busy with "golf cart" traffic during certain parts of the day, just think of rush hour in your home city but with golf carts instead.

If you are looking for a holiday with great snorkerling good food and friendly people then Ambergris caye is for your would recommend Ramons village but i haven't stayed any where else. The ease of getting around there is very good in a golf cart.

Friendly locals. Good food options and good scuba diving. Busy compared to its neighbour cage caulker, but nothing compared to big North American cities. I enjoyed the small town vibe and everyone asking each other “how’s it going?!”
